CompAnimals Pet Rescue

Located in Elkton, MD and serving upper MD, upper DE, and lower PA, this rescue focuses on the "unadoptables": cats & dogs missing hair, animals needing surgery prior to adoption, missing limbs or eyes, sick kittens or puppies that don't have a chance at the shelter, any animal that just needs a little extra TLC before finding that forever home.

Rescue News 3-8-07

Long Time No Blog!

But its not for lack of being busy - LOTS of activity here at CompAnimals!

With the Delaware SPCA going "no kill" by dropping the New Castle County dog control contract we have been rescueing dogs from other "high kill" areas. Most of the NCC strays are now headed to the Kent Co SPCA - that would be the logical place to pull dogs from but unfortunately its hard to get to as we have no volunteers in that area. So....we have been working with three other shelters: BARCS in Baltimore, Sommerset Co Dog Control in MD and a shelter in Murray Co, GA, of all places. Why go to Georgia for dogs, you ask? Well, the internet has made the job of pulling them easy - a volunteer sends out a weekly SOS complete with pictures (and some of the dogs have sponsors). We PayPal the shelter for the vaccination & transport fees & the dogs are practically delivered to our door. Murray Co, GA & Sommerset Co MD are both in a rural area with very low adoption rates and use gas for euthanasia which is a horrible & painful death.

We have had a lot of dogs come & go this past fall/winter. Some of our long term residents found their forever homes: CHARITY, MAX & BROOKE to name a few. Seniors KATIE & TAFFY were adopted! We have had several litters of puppies come & go and have enjoyed a diverse bunch of dogs from OTTO the Chihuahua to BEOTHUK the Newfoundland (both adopted) and everything in between. My favorite mix was GASKET - a short legged guy who looked like an accidental meeting between a Pointer & a Dachshund. Gasket came to us from GA and was adopted by a family in VT.

With the help of Pet Valu in Elkton we have increased our CAT ADOPTIONS! VELVET, CHOCOLAT, NIKO, KELLY, & long term resident & senior kitty DUSTY were all adopted as a result of our cage at Pet Valu. Each cat takes a turn for a week at a time in a two-tier cage at the store & we rotate through so everyone who will adjust OK gets to spend some time out in the public eye. We are looking for additional CAT FOSTER HOMES so that we can help even more kitties.

We had TWO NEW FOSTER FAMILIES join us last fall. JILL & ALEX fostered (and adopted :) BELLA, our little blue Pit Bull mix. MAIJA & JOHN stepping in to foster two black labs from WV - Lucy & Ethyl. LUCY was adopted into a wonderful home with lots of land to explore & ETHYL (who has a nipping problem) is still with us. ETHYL also presented us with a litter of pups in Oct (she was pregnant when she arrived here) ALL the pups have been adopted & two (CONFETTI & MOOSE) were adopted by their foster parents, Maija & John. As puppy season approaches (I don't think it ever ended this year!) we will be looking for PUPPY FOSTER HOMES. We like to split up the litters so it is easier to socialize & potty train the pups. Average stay in a foster home for a pup is about 4-8 weeks while they get their shots & spay/neuter surgeries. A great summer project for the kids!

LOTS of ADOPTION EVENTS coming up! Please stop by to hold a leash for a while or just say "Hi!"
Official dates & times will be posted on our Petfinder site but here is a preliminary rundown:

April 7th @ Oxford Grain & Hay/Oxford PA
April 21 @ Concord Pet/Hockessin DE
April 28 @ Concord Pet/Red Mill, Newark DE
May 5 @ Comic Book Show/Newark DE
May 19 @ Concord Pet/Hockessin DE
May 24 - June 3 @ Devon Horse Show/Devon PA
June 2 @ The proposed London Grove Community Dog Park/West Grove PA

LOTS of great pets for adoption! Pass it on.....

Our (almost) weekly FOSTER DOG WALKS in Fairhill (MD) will resume now that spring is in the air. If you would like to join us or take a foster dog for a walk we meet on Saturday mornings, weather & adoption schedule permitting. Email companimals@earthlink.net for more info.

Foster News 7-4-06

Happy Independence Day!

I know I have gotten behind in my blogging but now that I have a vacation day it gives me a chance to catch up....

We have been busy, busy, busy! May, which is usually our second best adoption month, was dismal but not for lack of trying. Mark & I spent 5 or 6 days up at the Devon Horse Show (thanks Joy for your hospitality) in either the blazing sun or pouring rain. We had a good collection of dogs from 4 different foster homes but our efforts ended in only one adoption - a cute little Chihuahua mix named Rebel (now Lucky).

A dual event at Concord Pet & Kmart brought in some adoption applications but none turned into actual adoptions until....

One month later at out June Concord Pet we had 4 successful adoptions!

ZOOT, who has been with us for over a year when to live with a very nice lady in MD who works with people who have seizures (just like Zoot) and may be able to take her to work with her.

STORM got adopted by a family in PA & initial reports are that she is doing great & their 10 yr old Rotti is "in love"

ASHLEY found a wonderful home in Wilmington DE & has a Ridgeback, Tango, as a companion. Her family says the transition went very well & Tango is becoming her old self again after grieving for her old canine friend who passed away.

SAMMY was also adopted (finally:) and has a Dachshund mix, Matilda for a friend. Says his new person," He seems so happy and I am so happy to have him!" Way to go Sammy!

BROOKE'S puppies are getting neutered & spayed approx 1 per week. The biggest male, Sixpence, has already found a home (he is living with PitSqueak & her new family in West Grove). Six more available - 2 males & 4 females.

At our first ever Pet Valu Elkton adoption event PUCKEY found his forever home. Puckey is now living with a horse trainer on 50 acres in Oxford PA.

Unfortunately, returned dogs & emergencies rushed in to fill the spaces so we were not able to take any of the many dogs on our waiting list....

RETURNS:

MAGOO, our special needs Korean Jindo was returned after an extended trial period in a prospective home. Magoo is has a cognitive disorder, possibly from head trauma as a young pup or he may have been born that way. He acts very much like an autistic child - happy in his own world. The family who tried him had 3 little dogs that were too active & unpredictable for Magoo's liking - he would do best with an older, laid back dog. Updated pics of Magoo will be posted soon.

BEAUTY, a large 5-7 yr old long haired German Shepherd & MAX, an even larger Husky/Lab mix of 2 yrs were returned from the same home when their senior caretaker could no longer keep up with her house & downsized into a condo. Beauty was in the home since last winter & Max joined them only recently & they do not need to be adopted out together. Max would do best with an active family & Beauty would be happy with another senior or a quiet family.

COOKIE is a cute, soft 3 yrs old Beagle now residing with Michelle after her first foster arrangement didn't work out. It turns out that Cookie needs Beagle experience! Thee pics on the site don't do her justice - come meet her in person at Concord Pet to fall in love!

NEWCOMERS (check the website for pics):

I picked ISABELLE out of a lineup of 4 mug-shots sent to me from the BARCS shelter in Baltimore and even though I didn't really have room for another Pit Puppy, I am glad I did. She is soooo sweet & truly deserves a life. I wish I could have helped the others too but we didn't even have room for this one. Issy looks to be part Boston Terrier also & will probably be smaller than your average Pit.

EMMA is the happiest near death dog I have ever met. We found her at the DE SPCA as an emaciated skeleton. In addition to being starved, she also has demodectic mange. She is gaining weight already & will soon start the mange treatment but it will be a while before she is ready for adoption.

BEEBEE is the most amazing Border Collie/Aussie who is blind at only 2-3 yrs of age from juvenile cataracts. BeeBee has adjusted well & almost doesn't seem handicapped. We are raising the money for an eye specialist to evaluate her condition & hopefully surgery to restore her sight.

TWINKLES (Chihuahua mix), ECHO (Poodle) and ASHTON (Shar Pei mix) joined us this weekend when their owners lost their home. They belong to a low income family that we have been helping over the winter & the dogs are all spayed (thanks to Debbie Roberts). The two little ones already have applications but Ashton needs to be treated for heartworms prior to adoption & won't be ready for a few months.

PUPPIES! Foster Mom Roberta's brother rescued a LAB MIX & couldn't afford her. We tried to get her spayed but she was in heat & he accidently let her out with his male while waiting for her second spay appointment. The result - 10 little puppies born 5-24-06. Mom & babies are now residing with Bernie in Conowingo (thanks Bernie!!) Initially he wanted BUDDY GIRL back after they were weaned but now it seems like she will be turrned over to us. Buddy Girl also has heartworms & will need extended foster care. Would like to move the puppies into individual foster homes or 2 by 2 when they turn 8 weeks old. They will be neutered/spayed before adoption.

MORE PUPPIES!! I was able to take 2 of the remaining 5 puppies in a litter & hope to be able to help the rest later as these get adopted. HOUSTON & STAR have an AMERICAN BULLDOG Mom but they take after their BORDER COLLIE MIX father. Black & white classic Border Collie markings, about 13 weeks old (they were born around Easter time)- these guys will be BIG!

FOSTER CARE NEEDED

Foster space is still at a premium - if you would like to foster any of our new dogs, returns or those on the waiting list, please email with FOSTER as the subject. (companimals@earthlink.net)

I am going on vacation from Aug 27 to Sept 3rd & am looking for foster care for some of the rescues that I am fostering during that time. Hopefully we will have some adoptions between now & then so I am not quite sure who will need fostering yet. If you are looking to be a foster parent this would be a good opportunity to get your feet wet.

On our WAITING LIST we have several dogs looking to get into the program:

1 LEXUS is a nice, spayed 2 yr old brindle female Pit Bull. She belonged to a young guy who wasn't stable enough in income/houseing to keep her & she is now residing with his parents. She is housebroken etc & would be an easy foster child. Email me for pics.

2 PATCHES is a Pit Bull mixed with Whippet (or so he looks) who is in the same situation as Lexus but the boys Mom has a broken leg & is having a hard time healing let alone take care of Patches.

3 TWO ROTTIS that belong to a man with terminal cancer are going to need foster care by the end of the month. He is keeping them as long as he can. Would like to keep together if possible. I believe they are 2 & 4 yrs old. (UPDATE: This duo has temporary refuge with Roberta. Thanks Roberta!!)

4 There is a PREGNANT LAB MIX due to whelp at the end of July. She is 9 yrs old. Anyone have room for a nursing Mom? Owner doesn't want the Mom OR the pups & is having trouble finding a rescue to take her because of her age.

5 SHOTZI, a senior MinPin, is living with the same low income family who turned over Twinkles, Ashton & Echo. She is snappy in her old age & the woman is living with a relative with a deaf child & is afraid he will get bitten. Shotzi has some arthritis in the hind end & will need a quiet foster/retirement home.

6 OWNER IN CAR ACCIDENT & might not make it. His son is trying to place the 2 dogs - 14 yr Australian Shepherd & her 5 yr old son who is an Aussie/Boxer mix. He doesn't think the dogs are spayed/neutered & are probably overdue for vaccinations & the older one is missing some hair. They are house dogs & housebroken & good with the owners grandchildren. We would get them vetted before going into a foster home but they need a place to go before we can commit to them.

THANKS JOY for taking TROUBLES & SNEAKERS!!!! They are two 14 yr old dogs whose owner died suddenly - they have been together since he adopted them from a shelter in 1992. Would like to adopt them together - pics available soon on Joy's site (www.adorableadoptables.com)

HAPPY FOSTERING - ENJOY YOUR PETS!

Foster News & Updates 4-30-06

Spring has Sprung!

May is traditionally our biggest adoption month and we are off to a good start! We have potentially 5 adoptions this weekend:

ADOPTIONS:

CHLOE (Beagle mix fostered by Michelle S) met her new people at our Concord Pet Adoption Event last weekend. They met her privately at Michelle's house on Friday & Chloe went to her new home. The folks at Concord Pet say she has already been in - getting loads of stuff & being spoiled :)

JOCK (Scottish Terrier fostered by me) had an overnight with a prospective family last night. Haven't heard yet but hopefully it will lead to a permanent home. If so, Jock would have a Scottie "sister" and live right across from a big park!

CRAW (Chinese Crested) was a celebrity on Petfinder the last couple of weeks! We had a LOT of wonderful addplications for him & settled on one not too far from home where his new person is home most of the day. He has a doggy friend too - a Shihtzapoo. I am sure Craw will enjoy romping in the 5 acres & his own lap to nap on!

RUCKUS (one of Hope's pup fostered by Roberta) left with Mark this morning - bound for PITtsburgh! Ruckus is being adopted by a nice woman who is from New Orleans & displaced by hurricane Katrina. She had actually rescued 2 Pit Pups from a neighbor days before Katrina hit but they unfortunately died at one of the makeshift shelters. I'll miss our little Ruckus & wish him well!

PITSQUEAK, who has been with me since last summer, also attended our adoption event last weekend & caught the eye of a father & son. She is going to meet the rest of the family this afternoon - and if all goes well she will stay. If so, PitSqueak will be living in Landenberg with 2 teenage boys & a German Shepherd.

Last week SIMBA (Pomeranian) went to a very special family - you may have seen them on the news. Sadly, their Pomeranian, Foxy, was abducted while being cared for by family members. Foxy had been best friend to their 18 yr old son who has muscular dystraphy. Although they still hope that Foxy comes home, Simba is trying to fill the void or at least give them another puff ball to love. I just got a wonder picture of Simba sitting in the wheelchair in his new masters lap - I wish I could share it with you! Good luck in your new home Simba - we knew you were special!

NEWCOMERS:

TAFFY (Beagle mix) was adopted from us a couple of years ago as a kind of service dog for a woman who had a fear of leaving the house. For a couple of years, they were a wonderful pair until we got an urgent call that Taffy's mom had to move quickly & left her behind with family members who couldn't keep her due to lease restrictions. I need to check her archived records at the vet but I believe Taffy is around 10 yrs old. She originally came from the DE SPCA when her elderly owners could not care for her. Taffy is used to being with her people 24/7 and we would like to find a similar home for her. She gets along with other dogs & cats & is currently being fostered by Michelle in Oxford PA.

FREDDY's person moved into a nursing home and couldn't take him. He was dearly loved by his family & misses them very much. Freddy is a mixed breed, about 10 yrs old & the size of a fat Husky. He looks to be part St Bernard or Bernese Mountain Dog. Freddy is temporarily bbeing fostered by Norma in Elkton but we are looking for a quieter home for him & maybe someone who is home much of the day. Norma has 6 dogs of her own & Freddy is meeting them one at a time & seems to be OK with other dogs. Please email with FOSTER FREDDY in the subject if you would like to help with Freddy.

SARA is an ordinary looking brown & white spotted Pit Bull who touched the hearts of some people at a WV shelter. Sara, named after the girl who crusaded for her rescue, certainly is one of the lucky ones! A volunteer (from Oklahoma, no less!) paid for her spay & vaccinations & the human Sara drove her from WV to the Maryland House rest stop on I-95 where I picked her up. Sara has been with us for a week now & has settled in nicely. She has taken a liking to my 12 yr old son & is often snuggled up with him on the couch. She has also graduated to sleeping in the bed! As promised, Sara is a nice dog & truly deserves a life. We think she'll make a great family dog.

Pictures of the new guys will be added to the site as soon as possible...

INCOMING:

We have several dogs on the waiting list to come in, one is most urgent:

DIAMOND is a brindle female Pit Bull, 8 months old, who has an injured leg. I do not have any details about the leg except that it doesn't seem to cause her any pain - possibly an old injury? A woman who does Pit Bull rescue in the Baltimore area (Diamiond was in the Baltimore City Shelter/BARCS) has offered to pay $500 towards her medical expenses. She is currently boarding Diamond & I have committed to pick her up next weekend. Not knowing the severity of the leg, I am looking for a quieter foster home than my own - at the same time, her foster home needs to be not too far from Landenberg in case she requires frequent vet visits. Please email with FOSTER DIAMOND as the subject if you are able to help with Diamond.

There is a family of four CHIHUAHUAS (age 14, 12, 11 & 11) that were turned into a shelter together. They were terrified & a woman took them out to offer temprary refuge. They are not currently in the CompAnimals program as we don't have room for them. If you are interested in fostering for us or adopting them directly from her, please contact me with 4 CHIHUAHUAS as the subject line.

I got an email from a woman who lost her husband & son & subsequently moved into a townhouse. She took the family Labs with her (10 yr old littermates) and they are not adjusting well. She, understandably, would like to keep them together which is going to make their placement more difficult. If you can adopt or foster for us please email with 2 LABS as the subject line.

ADOPTION EVENTS!

MAY 20 • Concord Pet Hockessin from 10-2
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!

May 20 • College Square Kmart from 11-4

Happy Easter Everyone!

It was a quiet Easter for CompAnimals - no new ones in & nobody going to a new home....but YESTERDAY we drove to the Baltimore Shelter (BARCS) and picked up 8 dogs! A nursing Momma Pit Bull (now Brooke) and her 7 tiny newborns. Once she settles in & is comfortable we will take pics & post on the site.

OTHER RECENT NEWCOMERS - be sure to check out their pics at www.companimals.org:

SMOKEY - a unique mix of Collie & Rotti. 11 months old & full of puppy energy being fostered by Roberta in Newark DE. Smokey is all vetted & ready for adoption.

SADIE - a 2 yr old Rotti that was brought into the SPCA to be put to sleep by her owner because "she needs room to run". Also being fostered by Roberta who just raves about her. Will be available for adoption soon.

CHLOE - a mature Beagle mix girl whose nose got the best of her & she ended up at the DE SPCA. Chloe has been spayed & vaccinated & is ready for adoption. Being fostered by Michelle in Oxford PA.

CRAW - a 1-2 yrs old Chinese Crested being fostered by yours truly. Personality plus and cute as a button. Craw will be neutered on 4/26 & available soon after.

JOCK - a Scottish Terrier who would have probably been adopted at the DE SPCA if it wasn't for his missing hair/skin condition. Has a great personality & already a family interested.

SCHNOOPY DAWG - brought to the Cecil CO SPCA by a neighbor after his owner died. A mellow guy, 9-10 yrs old & very cute. We are calling him a Schauzer/Beagle but his mix is really anybodies guess. Would be great for a retired person who needs a walking buddy. Would also be a great first time foster dog if anyone is interested!

SAMMY - has been with us for a while but only just listed. He is the last of Panda's Litter DOB 11-17-05 (Boston Terrier/Lab) and my favorite. To extra special home only....

FOSTER HOMES NEEDED:

Remember all the little puppies we had at Christmastime? Well, we have been adopting out 1 or 2 each week but still have several left that would benefit from individual foster care & someone who can devote some time to them with crate training & basic obedience to make them more adoptable. They are as follows:

PUCKY: DOB 11-15-05 Black & White Amstaff
This boy is the sweetest in his litter :)

DURHAM: DOB 11-15-05 Black & white AmStaff
This big boy is a CHUNK!

JOY: DOB 11-24-05 Dark Reddish Brown & White Pit Bull (One of Hope's Puppies)
An active, happy girl. A little shy about being picked up but very friendly

PUFF-N-STUFF: DOB 11-24-05 Mostly Black Pit Bull (One of Hope's Puppies)
A mischief maker - this girl wants to be in the middle of everything!

BOJANGLES: DOB 11-24-05 Mostly Black Pit Bull (One of Hope's Puppies)
This boy is the smallest of the litter - very sweet & snuggly & previous foster Mom, Roberta's favorite.

URGENT:

I was contacted by a volunteer from a WV shelter (where Elwood came from) about a White Pit Bull (F) that is "too good to put to sleep". The volunteer has arranged to get her spayed & vaccinated & transport her up here if we can find foster space. Her deadline was Tuesday but she thinks she can get it pushed to Thursday or Fri. I don't normally condone bring Pit Bulls in from other areas as we kill so many of them up here as it is but this dog has an advocate in this volunteer & it would mean so much to her to get her out. Email me at companimals@earthlink.net with FOSTER as the subject if you can help.

And speaking of Pit Bulls - this cute little 1 yr old named CHARITY that I am fostering has learned how to climb over my 4' fence. I am looking for another foster home for her own safety (I am near a busy road) Will need a 5' fence or someone who leashwalks. Charity is great with other dogs & learning crate training. Check her out on the site - she is brown & white spotted & has a cute, almost Boston Terrier-ish face.

ADOPTIONS:

Have tapered off this week.... DEEDEE was adopted & returned when she kept having accidents in the house. She is housebroken here & I think having trouble adjusting to the new routine & leashwalking as opposed to a fenced yard. Oh well - welcome back DeeDee, we'll find a spot for you...

JACKIE (BlackJack) was adopted & is currently in her 2 week trial period. Have not yet heard back - hope no news is good news :) Jackie was fostered by Mark in West Grove PA.

DAKOTA (Black Lab/Terrier) pup went to a new home last week & initial reports are good. She is learning sit, etc & playing well with the other dog in the family. Keep up the good work, Dakota!

RUCKUS (One of Hope's Pups) is scheduled to go to a new home next weekend - in Pittsburgh! Mark will be driving him halfway. Ruckus will be living with a couple of young women who were displaced by Katrina & actually tried to rescue 2 young Pitty Bull pups right before the hurricane. The pups, unfortunately didn't make it. Now that they are in a new home, they are ready to rescue again. Good luck in your new home, Ruckus!

BIG NEWS:

Foster Mom Joy has started her own rescue! Joy has been fostering dogs for CompAnimals for several years or more (mostly the oldies but goodies) and has adopted several as her own. Joy has recently gotten into puppymill rescue - getting the breeding age dogs out of deplorable conditions. She was inspired by her own Dachshund, Heidi, a puppymill survior. Check her new arrivals at www.adorableadoptables.com. Joy's website courtesy of Sherri W also a CompAnimals Adopter!

ADOPTION EVENT:

April 22nd at Concord Pet Supply in Hockessin 10-2
We have flyers up & if the weather holds this should be a great day - Foster Parents, be sure to bring your fur-kids!! DON'T MISS THIS ONE :)

Happy Fostering!

Foster News 3-23-06

Hi Everybody!!

Sorry for the long delay in between newsletters but we have been busy RESCUING!

Here's a rundown of the NEWCOMERS:

ELWOOD BLUES is a 10-ish yr old Blue Tick Coonhound who came to us from a shelter in WVa. The shelter staff was so taken with him that they paid his bail and arranged transport to MD. Elwood is residing with foster Mom, Michelle in Oxford PA. Elwood is a laid back guy looking for a retirement home.

Foster Mom, Joy, had EIGHT puppymill rescues come from an auction in Ohio. 2 Westies, 2 Maltese, 1 Boston, 1 Dachshund, 1 MinPin & 1 Toy Fox Terrier. They are going like hotcakes - some have been adopted already & others spoken for. I believe we still have the Doxie & the Westies available. If you know someone looking for a purebred dog with the patience to bring up a puppymill survivor, please contact Joy & she can have her contacts keep an eye out. Merrywinnie@nni.com.

Also with Joy is PADDY, the antique Collie from DE SPCA. Joy tells us that he is welcome to live his life out with her if he doesn't find the PERFECT home.

Foster Dad Mark & I drove to Baltimore to pick up 2 emaciated Boxer mixes. These 2 girls have been so badly starved that they are the size of 5-6 month old puppies but the vet thinks they are around 2 years old. MARY KATE & ASHLEY are VERY sweet though & I look forward to seeing them enjoy a "dogs life". Ashley is doing well & putting on weight but Mark Kate is at the vet as I write, receiving IV fluids & antibiotics for possible pneumonia. Please wish her a speedy recovery.

Oh yeah - almost forgot - we came home with a 3rd one from Baltimore - OLIVIA! Olivia is a 7 month old Pit mix - white with brown spots. She is very elegant looking & has one blue eye. Olivia is being fostered by Mark who was delighted to find out that she is already housebroken & crate trained. And a sound sleeper - too sound, actually - it seems Olivia is deaf. Sooo...we are looking for someone special for her - another dog to show her the ropes would be ideal.

And we can't forget STORM - a 1-2 yr old Pit Bull/English Bulldog mix who is a CHUNK! Her family fell on hard times & had to give her up. The animal control officer who picked her up for the DE SPCA thought she was really special & told the front desk girls that they just HAD to find her a home. She is a great, FUN dog - always happy & tailwagging & friends with everyone. Hope to place her in a home with kids.

CRASH came into the DE SPCA with a broken leg. His owners said he had been hit by TWO cars. Crash is a 3 month old Pit Bull puppy. his left front leg has a minor break that the vet says should heal on its own with crate rest & restricted activity. Crash has been a wonderful house guest - seems housebroken even! But I am looking for another (quieter) foster home for him since the Pit Bull puppies that I am fostering are 1 month older than Crash they might be a little rough with him once he starts walking about.

And last but not least: SIMBA. Simba is a 9 yr old Pomeranian - so happy & full of life. He was turned into the Cecil Co SPCA with all his vet records, a rawhide & his sweater which leads me to believe that he belonged to an elderly person who could no longer care for him. Simba gets along with everyone & would do great with kids, retired couple or just about any loving home. Cute as a button - you just have to squeeze him!

ADOPTED:

Several of our long term residents / special needs dogs went into new homes this month....

First there was ROCKY - a Pit Bull that I pulled out of the DE SPCA almost 2 yrs ago because he was the spitting image of my "Mouse" (only with ears). Rock has been a great dog to foster but I couldn't help but think he would be happier with more one-on-one attantion & a boy of his own. Well, he got one - Rocky is now living in Puxsetawney PA with 3 other dogs and his very own boy!

One the very same day that Rocky left us, KIMBER the Keeshond had an interview. Kimber has battled a skin problem for several years now that has left several different vets scratching their heads. Kimber is probably the sweetest dog you could ever meet - people just couldn't get past her "elephant skin". Thank you Mercure family for seeing her inner beauty!

And our special ed Jindo puppy, MAGOO, left for a new home last weekend. Due to his "uniqueness" & MAGOO is on a 2 month trial period instead of the usual 2 wks. I was very impressed at how he reacted with his new family & initial reports are promising so I hope that Magoo has found his niche.

PUPPIES are getting adopted - about 2 per week are finding new homes. Shyla's Litter (Husky mixes) have all been adopted & so have our Katrina Puppies, Bo & Diddley. We are down to one Boston/Lab mix, Sammy (my favorite) and have mostly the 2 litters of Pit Bull puppies. 7 still available - 2 girls & 5 boys - all spayed/neutered & ready for adoption.

NEED FOSTER CARE:

We have 2 dogs coming in from a disabled person on Saturday - a 7 yr old toy poodle who is on medication to control siezures & her "roomate" a 1 yr old Peke/Pug/Chihuahua mix. The poodle is already spayed & should find a home quickly - the Peke-a-pug-a-huahua uses piddle pads & newspapers but is young enough to housetrain.

There ia another Pit Bull on death row at the DE SPCA that I put my name on to buy her more time. A pretty brown & white spotted girl, approx 1-2 yrs old. Nice small size. Will be temperament tested & vaccinated before going into foster. Anyone interested?

I would also like to split up the 2 Pit Bull litters and place the pups in individual foster homes where they can get more one-on-one attention, crate traing, housebreaking, leashwalking, etc. The pups are about 4 months old now & have all been spayed/neutered.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Concord Pet Hockessin • Saturday, April 22nd 10-2PM

Foster Dog Walks every Saturday (unless there is an adoption event) • Meet at 8AM at the covered bridge at the Fairhill Natural Resources Area.

Simba, the pomeranian, would also like a nice calm foster home.

Happy fostering & enjoy your pets!
Leslie

Foster News 1-7-06

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

2006 already promises to be a great year for the rescue - its the YEAR OF THE DOG! Actually, here at CompAnimals, its the Year of the PUPPY! We have several litters coming available....

HOPE'S puppies (born on Thanksgiving Day) are doing well. They waddle around like little sumu wrestlers, according to foster Mom, Roberta. In another couple of weeks, I would like to move them into foster homes to give Mom a break & let Hope's milk dry up so she can be spayed & available for adoption. Any volunteers?

PENELOPE, unfortunately, had to be returned to the SPCA who in tun, gave her back to the owner after he threatened a lawsuite. I thought briefly about buying the pups outright but found out they were $1500 each :( Instead, I left word that if the Momma ever came back into the SPCA (she's microchipped now) that we would take her back. Some say that everything happens for a reason, though, and if it hadn't been for me returning Penelope that Saturday morning, I wouldn't have noticed a little beat up puppy in the back of the SPCA.....

.....SPENCER, the World's Cutest Puppy, joined us lated that week. He appears to have been mauled by another dog & from his scars, its hard to believe the little guy pulled through. He also had a broken jaw which causes his toungue to stick out and his big ears don't know which way to flop (can you tell I'm smitten?) 'Pence has been neutered & his jaw has healed & he is available now to a very special home. Check out his pic on the site - you'll fall in love too!

BO & DIDDLEY joined us from Katrina. They are giving Spencer a run for his title of World's Cutest! Bo & Diddley are a mix of Chow & catahoula - cute little square puppies! They will be spayed in early February but are vaccinated & ready for a foster home now - together if possible.

SHYLA is a small stray shepherd mix who gave birth to a litter of pups under a nice family's porch. The family took her in & are giving her (and 1 of the pups) a home. The rest of the litter was turned over to us & we will arrange for the spay of the mom. Dad was a purebred Husky who lived next door. The pups - Mick, Jagger, Bowie, Ozzy, Reba & Jovi - are wonderful pups - the family did a great job of raising them. Reba is in a foster-to-adopt home & we have several applications on the others. They are getting spayed/neutered 2 a week starting 1/9. If you are looking for a short term foster arrangement, most of these pups have been promised & just need foster care until about 1 wk after their scheduled surgery.

PANDA was also admitted into out "Spay the Mom" program when her litter of 8 was turned over to us. Panda is a Boston Terrier Mix who belongs to some folks who are down on their luck. The pups are adorable! Dad is a "Miniature Lab" (Boston Terrier mixed with Lab) And again, these pups have been very well socialized and will be wonderful pets. Due to their small size & the fact that they were loaded with worms, they will not be available until March. Once we gets the parasites under control, they can go into foster homes - preferably in pairs.

AND we have another litter of Pits - pure bred AmStaffs that acouple thought they could sell & make some bucks. Unfortunately (or fortunately, for the pups sake) no one wanted the males and a concerned person intercepted them before they were taken to the SPCA to be put to sleep. RED, DOZER, DURHAM & PUCKEY are about 7 weeks old & will be available in February after their neuters. Mom will also be spayed & remain in her home. Foster care for the pups is needed.

And just into rescue this past Thursday is VELVET, a Great Dane puppy who was in the DE SPCA with a broken leg. She is approx 3-4 months old and coal black. Velvet was x-rayed which showed a bad break in the right hind tibia. The fracture is long & jagged & luckily didn't shift & poke through the skin. The fracture is about 3 weeks old & has been healing by itself (quite remarkable for the size & activity level of this pup) Dr Michele prscribed crate rest for 30 days and come back in for another x-ray.

Also new to rescue but not in the puppy catagory are:

LULU BELLE, a wonderful smoke grey miniature poodle who is residing with foster Mom, Joy. Lulu knows tricks and reminds us of a circus poodle. She had a hard time getting over kennel cough, contracted at the SPCA but has put most of that behind her & will be listed on the site soon.

A new Beagle, CHUDLEY, wandered his way into foster, Michelle's house. A neighbor found him & called Michelle to ask if any of her Beagle's were missing - she counted 1-2-3-4-5 - no, they were all there. But now there are 6! Chudley (a mix of Charlie & Dudley - they couldn't decide) is about 1 yr old & active like a puppy - looking for an active home that can keep up with him.

EBONY is a round black Cocker Spaniel who was being turned into the SPCA by her owners when I happened to be at the counter. She gets excited when you pat her & she wets. She was so cute, playing with the kids in the lobby I couldn't let her get euthanised. She was so good with the kids in the lobby - I think we can find her an understanding home. Ebony is 4 yrs old & already spayed & ready to go. Currently residing with Foster Mom, Robeta.

Also with Roberta is MAC (he is the reason I was at the SPCA when Ebony was dumped) Mac had been at the shelter way past his time because one of the kennel workers liked him. He is a wild & crazy guy who needs someone patient yet firm that can deal with his puppy shenanigins. Pictures of this goof-ball will be posted soon - if you think you know what breeding he may have, please drop me a line. (The SPCA named him after an alien)

ADOPTIONS:

We had some wonderful adoptions at the tail end of 2005. LUCKY the rat Terrier was adopted at our December Concord Pet engagement. He has a wonderful "little old lady" home, just like we were hoping for. This is the best Christmas present that Lucky could ask for :)

On Christmas Eve, CHESTER the Chocolate Beagle went to live with a nice family with prior Beagle experience. Chester will enjoy the two teenage kids as he did his foster kid, Chelsea. Chester will also enjoy being an only dog again - I don't think he was too keen on the Beagle-mania at Michelle's :)

Our last adoption of the year came on New Years Eve - Joy's prayers were answered when MIGHTY MOUSE & CHURCH MOUSE were adopted TOGETHER! They have a wonderful home where they will be pampered for the rest of their years and we already have the pictures to prove it!

And one very special adoption - SNOW ANGEL, our special little girl who walked on her front legs. She was adopted by a wonderful woman who was born missing a limb and wears a prosthetic arm. She hopes to take Snow Angel to visit with children who are in the same situation and might benefit from a little love & support from a little white dog who overcame so much. Snow Angel loves kids and I feel like this is where she was meant to be. Phyllis has promised us pictures and updates which will be posted to the site.

HARRIET the poodle mix left for her new home this morning. Harriet will be living in Annapolis for a few months and will then make the move to North Carolina. New mom, Terri has promised to spoil her like a princess - and indeed, she did look like a princess in the making as she drove away in her plush doggy car seat :)

Surprise of all surprises, FERNANDO, who has been with us for almost a year, went home with a family this afternoon on a 2 week trial. I think this is the family Fernando was waiting for - they have another young female Pit (Cookie) and a 10 year old girl for him to snuggle with. Please wish Fernando the best of luck with a family of his own!

ADOPTION EVENTS:

Time to be announced - this promises to be a big one, possibly with radio coverage
