CompAnimals Pet Rescue

Located in Elkton, MD and serving upper MD, upper DE, and lower PA, this rescue focuses on the "unadoptables": cats & dogs missing hair, animals needing surgery prior to adoption, missing limbs or eyes, sick kittens or puppies that don't have a chance at the shelter, any animal that just needs a little extra TLC before finding that forever home.

Rescue News 3-8-07

Long Time No Blog!

But its not for lack of being busy - LOTS of activity here at CompAnimals!

With the Delaware SPCA going "no kill" by dropping the New Castle County dog control contract we have been rescueing dogs from other "high kill" areas. Most of the NCC strays are now headed to the Kent Co SPCA - that would be the logical place to pull dogs from but unfortunately its hard to get to as we have no volunteers in that area. So....we have been working with three other shelters: BARCS in Baltimore, Sommerset Co Dog Control in MD and a shelter in Murray Co, GA, of all places. Why go to Georgia for dogs, you ask? Well, the internet has made the job of pulling them easy - a volunteer sends out a weekly SOS complete with pictures (and some of the dogs have sponsors). We PayPal the shelter for the vaccination & transport fees & the dogs are practically delivered to our door. Murray Co, GA & Sommerset Co MD are both in a rural area with very low adoption rates and use gas for euthanasia which is a horrible & painful death.

We have had a lot of dogs come & go this past fall/winter. Some of our long term residents found their forever homes: CHARITY, MAX & BROOKE to name a few. Seniors KATIE & TAFFY were adopted! We have had several litters of puppies come & go and have enjoyed a diverse bunch of dogs from OTTO the Chihuahua to BEOTHUK the Newfoundland (both adopted) and everything in between. My favorite mix was GASKET - a short legged guy who looked like an accidental meeting between a Pointer & a Dachshund. Gasket came to us from GA and was adopted by a family in VT.

With the help of Pet Valu in Elkton we have increased our CAT ADOPTIONS! VELVET, CHOCOLAT, NIKO, KELLY, & long term resident & senior kitty DUSTY were all adopted as a result of our cage at Pet Valu. Each cat takes a turn for a week at a time in a two-tier cage at the store & we rotate through so everyone who will adjust OK gets to spend some time out in the public eye. We are looking for additional CAT FOSTER HOMES so that we can help even more kitties.

We had TWO NEW FOSTER FAMILIES join us last fall. JILL & ALEX fostered (and adopted :) BELLA, our little blue Pit Bull mix. MAIJA & JOHN stepping in to foster two black labs from WV - Lucy & Ethyl. LUCY was adopted into a wonderful home with lots of land to explore & ETHYL (who has a nipping problem) is still with us. ETHYL also presented us with a litter of pups in Oct (she was pregnant when she arrived here) ALL the pups have been adopted & two (CONFETTI & MOOSE) were adopted by their foster parents, Maija & John. As puppy season approaches (I don't think it ever ended this year!) we will be looking for PUPPY FOSTER HOMES. We like to split up the litters so it is easier to socialize & potty train the pups. Average stay in a foster home for a pup is about 4-8 weeks while they get their shots & spay/neuter surgeries. A great summer project for the kids!
